Just throwing an idea around here.

A know star bases have been talked before. But I was wondering about a different take on them...

What about a star base you are continually upgrading... it starts off as a small station. (On an asteroid etc) and then you purchase upgrades to it, with this the station continually grows and becomes bigger. Fighter bays etc... additional defences.

I was thinking something like this would for game play reasons take a long time to build (maybe requires using a fleet personnel slot to man?) and additionally research, limited to special places within the system (i.e. could only be constructed in the middle of those dead asteroid belts?) and over time becomes a structure of small connected buildings on the asteroids.

instead of it looking like a fully built station, it would have that appearance of "under construction" to it. (bit like when they built the death star ) so you would want to have ships guarding it.

Maybe the station over time can be either turned into a resource generating station or a forward military outpost.

I know these sectors you can build defence turrets and fighter bays. But I think something more special and unique which can be constructed inside them (and takes a lot of resources/time to build) would make holding/finding these areas more fun.

Ah well fair enough then.

Really they are only useful as a placeholder and a forward fighting base to keep people away from your home planets... still useful but maybe could be made into something better through a later achieved tech? maybe make the giant base mobile in the one system, like a giant fighting asteroid. Strengthen those choke points in a pinch!

... why? if they were a regular asteroid you get the same tac slots + more resources?

I didn't say that regular asteroids weren't more useful... just that dead ones are still useful.

I classify dead asteroids as more useful militarily, you can bunker up really well without risking anything in terms of infrastructure.

And then, we can make it move.

And why don't we just srap a huge cannon on it too!!!

This is like the best idea evurrrr...

you can say that about every ship in the game. it's all about balance.
there is a huge difference between big fleet base and a mobile planetoid class capital ship.

it was a parody darker.

I like the idea of upgradable bases, but they shouldn´t be super, just tier 2-3 defenses (gauss/hangar being tier 1) to with time and money replace the outdated weapon stations

i know . people here often say that changes would make ships too powerful and they kill some good ideas.

if you still think that i don't understand then maybe you are right
sorry for bad english...

The Star Base Idea is good especial if you colud build one around a Star becuse I'm getting tired of only being able to fortifie Stars by just leaving ships behind

Also have it so when you destroy one it renders a certian area around it unusable for a time and kill part of a neghboring planets population because of debries

Oh wow, way to support my sarcasm

i think thats the idea around stars. its bad tactics to have all your ships in one big fleet. so your meant to leave some around the star.

I DO like this idea!! i would love to see you be able to construct them around gas giants or nebulas or astroid belts (previously uncolonizable at all) though building of such a base does not mean you "own" the grav well... it just means on one can build another base with in "range" of your base. this would add an interesting tactic to previously uncolonizable grav wells. Though they would have to be VERY expensive and for the most part not worth building to make it balanced. In other words you would really need a presents in a particular grav well to make it worth the investment.

i know, i know. your all gonna say, if you can build them around those other places why not the sun... and IDK. maybe you should be able to, i just like the idea of stars being ONLY for ships to fight in a big empty void with LOTS of anti-mater.

the main reason you can't use 1 base to defend a star well is it is too big

again you people are missing the concept of neutral territory, the reason devs included uncolzable stars, nebulas, asteroid fields and gas giants was so that there would be some interesting key battles in these places, I for one think that the BEST of my battles have always occured in neutral territory! I dont want to see it marred by a super-turtle weapon. I cannot think of a worse reason to ruin this aspect of the game.
