Just throwing an idea around here.

A know star bases have been talked before. But I was wondering about a different take on them...

What about a star base you are continually upgrading... it starts off as a small station. (On an asteroid etc) and then you purchase upgrades to it, with this the station continually grows and becomes bigger. Fighter bays etc... additional defences.

I was thinking something like this would for game play reasons take a long time to build (maybe requires using a fleet personnel slot to man?) and additionally research, limited to special places within the system (i.e. could only be constructed in the middle of those dead asteroid belts?) and over time becomes a structure of small connected buildings on the asteroids.

instead of it looking like a fully built station, it would have that appearance of "under construction" to it. (bit like when they built the death star ) so you would want to have ships guarding it.

Maybe the station over time can be either turned into a resource generating station or a forward military outpost.

I know these sectors you can build defence turrets and fighter bays. But I think something more special and unique which can be constructed inside them (and takes a lot of resources/time to build) would make holding/finding these areas more fun.

Sorta like how space bases were in EAW ?

I'd like something like that... Maybe for the expansion...

id like that it sounds good maby an edited pirate bas sort of thing with cannons on it or soemthing it would be well cool.

Nice idea. i would love to have FleetBase that give some sort of bonuses like super sensors.

Military bases could be like that. And their military influence could grow with upgrades. If there is such a thing as military influence.

You always get secret/super bases hidden in asteriod belts

yeah, I would love to be able to create these bases and turn them into a huge trade/resource base or into a specially military outpost.

Investing resources into its construction would be crucial as you would want to protect it as you purchase expansions/upgrades.

When I find dead end systems I always think. This would be a cool place to build/develop a special outpost. Maybe after the initial creation of the outpost, you could choose to develop it into either research/resource/military base.

The thing I would want to see the most is its size and shape develop with each item you build/purchase for it; showing the amount of time and effort you have spent in building the base up, not like the current structures which just require a few clicks to rebuild if destroyed...

This would give you more reason to defend it, get a fleet to protect it and make a tactical decision about where you choose to construct them. Build them deep in protected space? or build near the frontlines.

I think it would be cool if asteroid colonies could do this... I feel the little population ring is just not as cool as having structures jut out... It could eventually be upgraded into a fleet base which maybe provides a large movement bonus to ships in adjacent systems (more available fuel).

That could be offensive and therefore make it a great tool and a big target!

I personally would prefer stations that could be built *anywhere* in a gravity well that basically acted like a planet without the gravity well and some of the planet upgrade options. The idea being, that they use Logistics points to build, but then some of these could be freed up by purchasing "logistics Effiency", and extra population cap could be purchased with "Habitation modules". All the population would have to come in via trade ships or something to start with, becuase people don't just come from thin vacuum. There could have maybe a limit of one in non habitable systems (Which would provide a small number of logistics and Tactical points so that the system is worth something)but no limit other than logistics in habitatble ones.

It could just be added variety to logistics/tactical improvements to a planet. Maybe instead of massing gauss batteries you'd rather invest in a military station and fully upgrade it. It would cost a lot of tactical points and a lot of resources to fully upgrade it, but you would get the benefit of several fighter/bomber squadrons, missile defenses, shields, repairs, maybe a few unique special abilities. Or, if you're in a dead end system deep in your controlled territory, maybe you'd want to make it your main research base and spend logistics points to build and develop a research station with bonuses to that.

i think to start with said base if built in a colonizable grav well would cost some logistic points and later with up grades adds logistics.

Sounds like the orbiting bases in the old Masters of Orion.

You know i think this would be a GREAT idea to dowith a dead asteroid feild...I mean come on, as it standsi have found VERY little use for them but it would be nifty to be able to transform a dead asteroid into something...well...useful

as if dead asteroids arent strong enough with their tactical defensibility anyway.

They are (quite) useful, when they're in a choke-point.

... why? if they were a regular asteroid you get the same tac slots + more resources?

I didn't say that regular asteroids weren't more useful... just that dead ones are still useful.
